OK. I give up

I think I'm going to have to buy one of the infernal devices known as Mobile Phones. I almost certainly won't use it much, making Pay As You Go cheaper- but does anyone have any advice as to who to buy a cheap but reliable one from? ("Features" other than SMS don't worry me that much).

I have an old Motorola V50 that is looking for a home, am willing to give away for free. Is unlocked to all networks, but will require you to buy a PAYG SIM card for it.

I've been fairly happy with Virgin for cheep-n-cheerfulness. THey do a nice direct-debit deal which is a hybrid between pay-as-you-go and contract, or you can use straight PAYG.

The Nokia 1100 is going very very cheap at the moment, and has the upsides of almost no features, and great battery life.

Downsides: I'm told that Virgin has poorer coverage than other networks outside London/the South-East.

Mine is alright. Have to say I haven't the faintest clue about comparative prices. I just picked a relatively cheap one that came with Orange. It's a Siemens A60. I'd have got the cheaper one, but it was out of stock.

Orange seem pretty reliable as far as coverage goes, and I've got a card attached to my phone, so I can put money in all over the place. Usually use Asda when we go shopping.

When I was in a similar position to you, I ended up getting a fairly flashy phone with a year's all-inclusive contract, because that worked out about half the price of buying even a basic handset only phone. I had no intention of using 200 minutes a month or whatever it was, and neither did I want the latest all-singing all-dancing bells and whistles model. But the market is kind of weird because they're so desperate to hook you into a contract.

There was a minor hidden cost because I ended up paying £20 at the end of the year in order to keep the same phone number and move to PAYG. But the price of phone + 1 years' use + £20 was still significantly less than the price of buying a standalone phone.
