I had no concept of how much I was going to be taxed as a self-employed person. It was a lot. Nearly twice as much as Starbucks withheld from my paycheck (and if that had been my only job last year, I would have received a refund.) I suppose I should have looked into that when I got this job, or calculated my taxes a while ago. Correctly, that is. ( Read more... )

If it's any consolation, most or all of my refund and my stimulus check are going to be stashed so I can move into a new apartment at the end of this summer. I haven't saved a darn thing this season, but part of that is just me being a dork :\

my dad was self employed for a while there too and his taxes were a shocker- here's to hoping you find an awesome job that deserves you and uncle sam wont rape your wallet anymore

I was listening to "This American Life" and rather than having a professionally recording interview with high tech mics and other recording equipment, a girl used a boombox and answering machine. It was really, really cool. I know that isn't much of a consolation, but it's nice to see that people can do creative and impressive things without investing a ton of money into it.

And so can you! Or, you know, invest in a month or so. :)

that FICA will bite you in the ass when you have to pay both sides (employer and employee). the number one reason i will never do contract work. they suck you DRY. i say thank you to financial arts management for teaching me this useful lesson in college.

here's my helpful hint - file quarterly. it makes it a lot easier. i'll buy you a beer next time i see you, or maybe a taco.
