cherry blossom series masterlist“Father, I don’t need a teacher,” the young man retorted, barely smothering his anger as the lord frowned down on him.
“Indeed you do, Kyuhyun. You may be mature and intelligent, but you are still naïve,” the Lord said, turning away from the seething boy. “Your teacher arrives tomorrow. Obey him or answer to me,”
And with that, the formidable figure walked off while Kyuhyun hissed, brown eyes burning.
“I’m seventeen, father,” he hissed under his breath, “how is that naïve?”

“You’re rather naïve,”
Kyuhyun stared back, debating whether to strangle the man in front of him or hit his head against the table. He decided on the latter.
“Teacher,” Kyuhyun muttered, his head against the table, much to the other man’s confusion, “I understand that you are to analyse my personality, but you need not tell me,” Kyuhyun growled, gritting his teeth in an attempt to control his anger.
Zhou Mi, his new teacher, a scholar from China, chuckled, smiling brightly at him.
“I may be a scholar, Kyuhyun-sshi, but I am not much older than you; you can just call me Jumyuk,” another bright smile and Kyuhyun was beginning to get a headache, either from the attitude of his “teacher” or all the smiles, he wasn’t sure. Did the man ever stop smiling?
“Then, Jumyuk-hyung, what are we learning today?” Kyuhyun said, fiddling with the brush in his hand. Zhou Mi smiled again and Kyuhyun resisted the urge to roll his eyes.
“Tell me, Kyuhyun,” Zhou Mi said, resting his chin on his hands, “why do you think I’m here?”
Kyuhyun scoffed. “You’re here because my father thinks I need to stop being so naïve,” and then he flushed, realising he had practically admitted it.
Zhou Mi smiled again and Kyuhyun scowled. The never-ending smiles were beginning to annoy him, yet there was a lingering question that he longed to ask, but dared not.
“What are you meant to learn to stop being naïve, Kyuhyun?” Zhou Mi asked.
“I don’t know,” Kyuhyun muttered, staring at the blank sheet of paper absently. He did better in the strict, rigorous tuitions with teachers that made him write pages and pages. But this? This was so very, very new and Kyuhyun didn’t know what to do with himself.
“Give it a try. There’s no right or wrong answer, Kyuhyun,”
And Kyuhyun looked up to see the dark eyes watching him, gentle and kind. He swallowed. “Learn more about life?” he tried.
Zhou Mi smiled, and Kyuhyun realised that he didn’t know whether a smile was a good thing or a bad thing. “Then what is ‘life’?”
Kyuhyun raised an eyebrow at him. “Being alive? To live?” he tried, not seeing the point. Zhou Mi grinned, shaking his head. Kyuhyun continued to stare at him, as if the older was crazy. When Zhou Mi continued to watch him, waiting for another answer, Kyuhyun gave up and reached for his dictionary, but a gentle hand stopped him.
“I want the answer from you, not the dictionary,” Zhou Mi whispered and Kyuhyun pulled his hand back quickly, eyeing the older man.
He hesitated. “Life is existing, being able to grow, to live and then to die,” Kyuhyun answered carefully.
Zhou Mi looked at him, face blank for a moment, before he nodded, smiling again.
“Good,” he said, “I look forward to studying with you, Kyuhyun,”
Kyuhyun snorted. “You’re the teacher. You’re meant to teach me,”
Zhou Mi laughed. “You never stop learning and you never truly know more than another,” he answered, smiling, “so we’ll just be learning together,”

Kyuhyun picked a blossom off the tree, cradling the small pink flower delicately in his hands.
“They’re very pretty aren’t they?”
He turned to see Zhou Mi walking slowly towards him, his eyes looking up to the high branches of the tree. He nodded as Zhou Mi lowered his head, smiling at him.
“Jumyuk-hyung,” Kyuhyun whispered once Zhou Mi was beside him, “No, you’re Zhou Mi-ge,” and the older man looked a little surprised at the change to Mandarin. “Do you still remember that day? Beneath the cherry blossom tree?”
And this time, when Zhou Mi smiled, it wasn’t one of his blindingly bright smiles, it was a small, gentle, knowing smile, and Kyuhyun didn’t need to ask again, because he already knew the answer.
