I always go for compact, because it's just a couple dollars more. They tend to have economy cars still around, but no place in San Diego actually has compacts at the airport, so its generally a free upgrade. The next grade up is frequently out too. I tend to drive away with a luxury car for $13.95, +$5 for some upgrade I was willing to pay for. I had a mustang convertible for a week for less than $20/day for this reason at one point.
