In an effort to improve the quality of my sleep I've been trying melatonin at night. When I first began a few months ago I didn't notice any improvement at all, and stopped when I ran out. Wow, maybe I should give that a shot. For me, melatonin takes 1-2 hours to kick in. If I don't get 9 hours of sleep, I feel tired in the morning. I prefer using Benadryl occasionally; for me, it works slightly faster and leaves me a bit less sleepy in the morning.

Likewise! I was dropping in here to comment the same...

Most times I restart 5-HTP or some other things -- or even quit taking something -- the dreams can be INCREDIBLY intense, crazy futuristic complicated scenarios.

Really? I take 5-HTP. Where are my awesome dream sequences? I'm just exhausted.

Melatonin gave me nightmares. But Cymbalta, the prescription I'm on now, gives me lucid dreaming, along with the vividness.

Amitriptyline, marketed as Elavil, is cross-prescribed for sleep problems. I liked much better that Ambien, and some of the other prescrip sleep alternatives (it's also not addicting, and won't make you do wacky things in your sleep), and it definitely does the vivid dream thing.
