The only thing I find a little weak in your comparrison is the parallel between Clinton and Russell. While I get that they're both moderate, Establishment candidates, the show focused a lot on the fact that Bob Russell was an absolute moron, whereas Clinto is smart as hell.
I don't really think a Clinton - McCain race would be boring; instead, it'd just be tragic. Given Clinton's lack of appeal and that McCain is still seen (by most) as the Republican answer for moderate Democrats, he'd thoroughly trounce Clinton. And, really, who wants the John McCain of 2008 in office anyway? He's been such a hack recently that I can't imagine he would make a good president or even be much of a change from George W. Bush.
