I talk about this a lot. It's a phrase I use in rejection letters and when I'm speaking at conferences. I see a great many manuscripts that show promise: good story, interesting characters, steady pacing that builds suspense. But all too often, the writers have jumped the gun and sent me a draft that still clearly needs rewriting ( Read more... )

sartorias is wise, as always. The problem is that writers need to develop both their writing and their critical skills - unless you are able to see how something works, you cannot acquire the skills to use that tool.

Thanks for the tip, Nephele,

I think that's the hardest part about being a writer - conveying what you see and imagine in your head - and understanding when you're not actually doing that.
