i'm thinking about getting a sony vaio notebook.  i've never really even considered sony when shopping for desktops and laptops, but one of their models is pretty nice.  it's the PCG-TR3A.  it's about 3 pounds and has a 10.6" screen.  the only drawback i can figure is the size of the hard drive, only 40 gb, and the price which is right at about 2k ( Read more... )

I think the VIAO desktops are junk, but I like the notebooks. That is a tiny lil' thang! (which I assume us great for carting around school)

I would go with as much warranty as you can get. Laptop screens are vulnerable, and 1/3 or the cost of the machine.

yeah, comp usa has a service plan that includes screen protection. i'd probably get it because i definitely feel that it could be vulnerable to screen cracking.

thanks for the info

Intel® 855GM Chipset Integrated Graphics 64MB (shared)

In general it's a pretty good laptop. If you expect to play anything more than Starcraft on it though (which you may not, considering it's just for school), you'll find that it's sorely lacking in the graphics department due to the specification above.

If you know for a fact that you will never play games on it, though, it's a great laptop.

and get the extended warranty for it, as laptops WILL break sooner or later, despite their being engineered to be used on the run.

well the only games i was thinking of playing were along the lines of age of empires II and rise of nations.. both seem to be graphically unintense, what do you think?

Not that it means much, but my ex bought a viao a few months before he and I broke up. I only ever messed with it once and that was only to play Civ III, but he loved it and I thought it was pretty swanky. But definitely get that warranty.
