I remember the Gulf War (or Operation Desert Storm if you prefer) on the news. Fields of oil wells on fire. I'm not sure how it impacted my world view, except to reinforce the myth of constant violence in the Middle East.

I think the Gulf War was my first major event too. I remember press conferences of a smiling Saddam before the war started and thinking it was a bit weird it could go from that to war. I also remember the 1998 Seoul Olypmics, but that's not really a news event.

The first moon landing is the earliest news that I can remember. We were all taken out of our classes at school to watch it on a big TV screen set up in the hall. Because we were the youngest and smallest, we had to sit cross legged on the wooden floor in the front. I remember mostly the fuss that was being made about how important it was that we watch the TV and how uncomfortable it was to sit on the floor. Now, any space 'stuff' is pretty much at the bottom of the list for me as far as interest goes.

When we went to the Science Museum in London, I was reminded of the event by hearing the same or similar broadcast.

Last year, I regained some interest in astronomy as I was involved in creating an educational video about the development of optical telescopes. Even bought a book with pretty pictures :)
