I am getting so frustrated with my Spanish skills (or lack thereof)! Most of my sources for my thesis are in Spanish, and while I am slogging through them well enough, I find it hard to believe that there was ever a time when I was able to converse freely and easily with people on the street in Costa Rica, watch Spanish movies without subtitles,

Heh I so understand your frustration here. I have the same, just not with Spanish but with French. I am taking up some french classes next year to get my skill back up, cuase it sucks having worked on a language for several years, and then simply forgetting most of it cause you never use it no more.

It'll get back to you though, I am sure! I was surprised that a few weeks back I had to do some research for uni and came across grench textx, and while I can hardly speak it no more, reading it went surprisingly smoothly (or perhaps I just /thought/ I understood it ;))
