A couple of weeks ago, my mom sent me a package full of goodies from the US. In addition to a couple of my pie pans (I had been complaining that I couldn't find the proper kind here for making American-style pies), a bag of chocolate chips for making cookies, and some assorted candy, the packaged contained my prescription refills. I'm still covered ( Read more... )

I really appreciate the offer, but I finally just called up Rick's mom and read it to her over the phone. It was actually pretty straightforward once we got through all the fluff-- once I have cleared up the matter with them (by either acknowledging that I have to pay the fee, or by successfully challenging it), then the package will be delivered to my address. Which is good news-- I was afraid I'd have to go pick it up somewhere. :-P

If you can scan the letter and post it here, maybe I could help?

It's actually a lot clearer now, since I read it aloud to Rick's mom over the telephone and got her to help me translate it. But I do appreciate your offer-- it's nice to know that if I get overwhelmed by all this gobbledygook, there are people out there willing to lend me a hand. :)

Welcome to the world of Dutch red tape! I don't want to discourage you, but even the Dutch themselves can't get used to it... ;-)

Jeez, how did it end? It sounds kind of ridiculous. As if you're some company importing goods, it's stupid.. and yeah, maybe your mum thought, put a lot of money on it, so that if something goes wrong you might get a lot of insurance money...

That's exactly what she thought, unfortunately. I explained to her that no one was going to give her $200 if it got lost just because she wrote that amount on the customs declaration; you have to buy insurance for that. *sigh* Mothers...

I'm still waiting for a "chauffeur" to bring my package to the house... I will have to pay him some ungodly amount (probably more than the contents are even worth!), and then it should all be okay again. But I've instructed my mom to never, ever write more than $40 on the package, even if she's mailing me gold bricks. :-P
