It's cold outside

Urgh, it just occurred to me that today is Thanksgiving. Or at least I think it is. And instead of being at home in Plano, fighting over that last piece of pecan pie, I am sitting here in Holland reading the world's most boring articles about the evolution of social complexity in the Caribbean. I'm supposed to write 1500 words about all this in the ( Read more... )

I only celebrated Thanksgiving with Tan's family once, but I really enjoyed the day heh, and her mum can cook heavenly! Oh how I miss the turkey and best of all, the seasoning heh.

I hope you'll have a nice meal - even though you're in this chilly frosty tiny bitty land now - and good luck with your turkey!

(ps. I know the feeling about James and how you spent years together yet am now guessing how he's doing. I have the exact same thing with Niels and it still makes me feel a bit strange heh.)

Thanks! I have never cooked Thanksgiving dinner by myself before, only just helped my mom (which mostly consists of me standing around drinking a glass of wine and talking to her while she works, since she is a total control freak in the kitchen, hehe). So I have no idea how this will all turn out... I am a little bit nervous since one of my guests, Piet, is the world's best amateur chef (honestly, I have never had fancier or tastier meals than his, even in expensive restaurants). Not to mention the fact that I suck at doing multiple things at once, and usually wind up burning one dish while working on another. This will definitely be an adventure! :)

Oh, and I know you said you had plenty of time to get together after November 10th, but that's precisely when the hectic time began for me at uni-- one presentation after another, lots of papers and group projects, etc. To be honest, I'm not sure if I will have any time at all until winter vacation... :( I leave in two weeks for a week-long conference in Bonn, then I come back and have exams all the following week. After that, though, school is finished for me until mid-February, so I have plenty of time during the break to get together, if you're still interested. :)

Heh it's ok, I have been really busy as well - even during my week off! I understand the hectics of university. I just started my new block, and have a crazy schedule! Only 5-6 hours of class a week!! Darn, sounds nice but that means lots and lots of work to be done at home heh. I will be leaving for the States December 23rd and am returning the 8th of January. So uhh, we'll just have to wait and schedule something once we both are available?? I do have a car now btw so perhaps I can hop in it and just drive to Schagen some day hihi. (It's great having your own car, even here where the public transportation is so much better then in the States heh). We'll see. Good luck on your hectic couple of weeks ahead of you! And enjoy your time in Bonn, even though you have a conference. Have you ever been there?

I cooked my first Thankgving dinner 4 years ago. With frequent calls to my Mom it was a hit and now it's become a tradition...but yeah, never quite the same as back home.

I'm curious how your pecan pie turns out. I tried once but it didn't work out too well and it was so difficult to find all of the ingredients (corn syrup...Oh where, Oh where?)

Your studies sound fascinating and Leiden is an ideal place to be studying them (would be my impression)...but the trip from Schagen to Leiden? That's quite a lot of time in the train.

As far as Internet stalking...I fear we've all been there.

Well, good luck with your dinner preparations. Here's hoping we both impress our Dutch guests.

I will definitely be spending a lot of time on the phone with my mom! :) She's already explained the process of roasting the turkey, but now I need to get her to guide me though making the gravy, the dressing, the green beans, etc. I'm kicking myself for not paying closer attention when I was still living in the US, but I've always been much more interested in baking than in actual cooking (I always made the pies, even when I lived at home), so my sister and I always just left the rest to my mom. Which leaves me undergoing a sort of trial by fire this weekend... Eek ( ... )
