[Character Name]The People's Republic of Hungary/Magyar Népköztársaság. ( Erszébet Héderváry )
In Hungarian, she's known as "Magyar"-she was dubbed Hungary by the rest of Europe because she reminded them of the Huns! Hungary may or may not actually be related to them-Hungarians were pretty fond of the idea because it gave them a scary reputation, but there's no real proof genetically or otherwise. They do come from the same area though. Since in Hetalia Hungary is mentioned to have had a grandfather figure, who has alternatively been called "Magyar" and "Hun," I'm assuming that in this universe at least, she really is the granddaughter of the Huns. Let's get down to business? History tangent aside, she thinks of herself as Magyar but obviously responds to Hungary just as much!
Her human name is Héderváry Erszébet-note that Hungarian uses "eastern" name order (last name-first name), and that her name has… various spellings. Erszébet is the Hungarian variant of "Elizabeth." I tend to assume that she uses that spelling properly, but has no qualms about also writing it Elizabet when among non-Hungarians, since she recognizes her language is kind of confusing looking. (As an aside, when she was married to Austria, she didn't take his name, but she did spell her first name Elizabet.)
[Canon]Axis Powers: Hetalia.
[Point Taken from Canon]16 August, 1989.
[Age]Physically in her early-to-mid twenties, actually ~1,000.
To get tl;dr about it, Himaruya once stated she's "slightly" older than Prussia and Austria. The Magyar date from about 300 AD, but she's not that old because she had a grandfather figure who probably ran things before her. Anyway, I date Hungary's birth to around the 830s, which is when the Magyar first are known to have settled down permanently in Europe. Around then I guess her grandfather died and left her in "charge" of her people! The earliest (chronologically) we see her in the strips is in 999 AD, when she converted to Christianity.
[Gender]Female.
[Sexual Orientation]Heterosexual.
[Eye Color]Green.
[Hair Color]Brown, slightly wavy, and quite long.
[Height]short 5'3"/160 cm but in my head she's more like 5'5" because she is not a japanese woman, himaruya
[Other]Not really a physical feature, but she's nearly always wearing a pink, geranium-shaped clip in her hair just above her right ear.
[Clothing]Hungary tends to dress for practicality, not fashion, but she does dress up sometimes. On serious occasions she'll appear in
military clothing or
national dress, but usually she can be found in a long skirt, simple blouse, dress, or something like that; she tends to not wear pants (preferring skirts) unless it's a task that would be hard in a dress. Her favorite color for clothing seems to be green. She's also prone to tucking her hair back behind a kerchief rather than putting it in a ponytail or something! Basically she's just not very fashionable… or rather, she really doesn't care much about it.
[Background]In about four paragraphs, Hungary's history is this: born a nomadic punk horseman (who thought she was a boy), Hungary spent her early years kicking ass and taking names, sometimes with her friend/hired military the Teutonic Order. He turned out to be a pain so she kicked him out. (Boo, Popes.) She gave up her nomadic ways and grabbed herself some land, settling down and preparing to live a relatively peaceful life. (She also briefly unified with Poland under a single king around this time paragraphperiod, making them besties for life. "The Hungarian and Pole are brothers," etc.)
Except that her new house was smack-dab between the Holy Roman and Ottoman Empires, so, you know, hah. Hungary spent a while trying to drive both empires away-and did an okay job of it for a time-but eventually fell and was partitioned roughly three ways: one part going to Austria/the Holy Roman Empire, the biggest part falling under Ottoman control, and the last part remaining independent and becoming Transylvania. Fragmented like this, Hungary became a servant, although she retained her reputation for ass-kicking when it came to Hungarian mercenaries, troops, and especially cavalry. After a century or so of mostly fighting Ottoman, Austria took control of the Ottoman portions of Hungary, and she in deep gratitude began to try to fight him next.
Hungary soon settled down as Austria's servant/underling/maid, and we see quite a lot of her from this era in Hetalia: she does the chores, takes care of little Italy, and eventually grows fond of Austria in a way the author says is "complicated." While eventually Hungary gave Austria a lot of her loyalty, happily fighting for him in wars, there was always the part of her that wanted freedom and independence, and kind of resented his control and bossiness. In the early 19th century, the Holy Roman Empire was abolished, and Austria became the 'Austrian Empire.' He then dragged Hungary along as his subordinate, which really kind of ticked her off because just no. Hungary got all nationalist and in 1848, decided to make a break for independence via revolution. Austria, in what researchers (me) call a "dick move," allied with Russia to beat her up. Then to try and be nice about it, he threw her a couple of bones, trying to make friends with Hungarian peasants and stuff like that. A few years later, Austria gets beaten up badly by Prussia, losing his status as Main German Country Guy once and for all. Hungary was immediately like PFFFFF AUSTRIA YOU KIND OF SUCK, and started trying to leave again. In what was probably a slight panic, Austria suggested they just get married instead. AND THUS AN EMPIRE WAS BORN.
A joint monarchy, Austria and Hungary pretty much governed themselves independently, with a king and ministers foreign relations, defense, and money shared between them. Austria got to keep his Empire status, Hungary got 90% independence plus the help of Austria (a much more industrialized nation) in developing. It wasn't a perfect union by any means, but it worked well enough for them both that it stayed in place until the forced separation in WWI (not that by then there weren't OTHER problems…). After this, they went through a rough period. Hungary tried her hand at independence and had a poor time of it. When WWII rolled around, she joined the Axis but later regretted it: trying to switch sides to the allies, she was instead annexed by Germany and later given to Russia as a war prize. Hungary was not thrilled. She tried to overthrow communism and failed badly with the assistance of Russian tanks (and the LACK of assistance from EVERYONE ELSE IN THE WORLD), but didn't give up. In the 1980s, her relationship with Austria began to improve again-he had already taken in hundreds of thousands of refugees of hers-and they came together and decided to be secret agents work together again to take down the iron curtain, open their borders, and smuggle thousands of East Germans to the West. It's at this point that I'm taking her; from the Pan-European Picnic, a hilariously blatant attempt to get East German vacationers to "accidentally wander" across the border into Austria.
[Personality]
- Hungary can seem kind of dual natured, but she's really not! She's basically a kind, helpful, "big sisterly" character, who tries to be level-headed and calm about everything. …It's just that she's very much lead by her emotions, so if she gets worked up in any way, she has the habit of just yelling out whatever and not thinking. While when she's angry she has pretty much no shame about her sudden transformation into LOUD AND ANGRY!!!, she can get kind of embarrassed about it other times (like when it's yaoi related!). In these cases she tends to protest that she's a "maiden," so of course she's not perverted or strange!! Maidens aren't like that!! So, basically, friendly and cheerful with a weird streak…
- She has a few pretty specific buttons that you can press but doesn't get angry easily… just generically worked up. But she does tend to hold grudges for a loooong time. Once she dislikes someone, she is just wary and unpleasant for years. She can be pretty petty when this happens too, but it doesn't happen easily or often!
- When she was younger, she was a punk nomad who attacked everyone. Himaruya describes it like she was in a bike gang… it's not far off. She's calmed down a lot since then, but when she gets angry she reverts a little to a rougher, ruder way of speaking.
- While she tends to be pretty polite most of the time, she's not shy! If she'd like something or wants to ask about whatever, she pretty much will. Politely, but directly. She's also a worrier, and prone to fretting over people and things. She's not very shy about this, either, although she will at least try to be out of the way about it if it's not her business… and then jump in when asked. She won't hide the fact that she's worried, but she won't meddle uninvited!
- She also used to think she was a boy and only realized she wasn't when puberty hit………… WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THIS.
- Hungary has a slightly mischievous sense of humor. She wouldn't prank someone or make fun of anyone for a laugh, but she's not above playfully teasing Ukraine over her chest for example, or laughing at bad dating advice in one of Austria's books. She also tried to force Austria into cat ears at least once, which probably factors in somewhere. - Not that she'd actually force him or anyone, just that it amuses her to ask!
- She's actually kind of a pervert SHE WILL DENY THIS SO MUCH MAIDENS ARE NOT PERVERTED but yeah she's a ridiculous voyer.
- She has no blood family, but she considers Austria, North Italy, kind of Germany, and possibly some of the yet-introduced (Czech??) neighbors of hers to be as good as family. Poland is not family but is her BFF. She's also good friends with Ukraine! Prussia… she hates him but she'd also miss him if he died. NOT A FRIEND THOUGH. Mess with any of them, especially Austria, and she will hunt you down. Hungary tends to be really, really, kind of overly protective of her loved ones, and is really the type of person who wants to take care of others regardless!
- All things considered, Hungary is really passionate! Not in the romantic sense, but in the EMOTIONS AND IDEALS RULE ALLLLLLLLL sense!
[Specialties/Abilities]
- First of all, she's a country. This means a lot of being very old and not dying. She's also a really strong fighter and joked to be the strongest of them all. Not that I'll take that too seriously here of course, but she can definitely hold her own!! She's especially known for her skill with ranged weapons, and has a personal favorite, er, weapon, the frying pan. DON'T LAUGH. SHE'LL SERIOUSLY KILL YOU WITH IT.
- Other random country-based skills: horseback riding she is so good at this, basic construction, parliamentary procedure and court etiquette, how to be a fancy-pants aristocrat, LOTS OF DANCES, lots of cleaning/cooking/washing things ability, etc. She's a decent cook but likes everything to be incredibly strongly seasoned and often spicy! But she's not at like "amazing!!" levels, she's just average.
- She can speak Hungarian, German, Polish, English, and Russian fluently! She can also do pretty decently in Italian and French (although she's a bit rusty in French), and a lot of regional languages/dialects. She used to speak Turkish but has been trying hard to forget it… when she speaks German, she speaks distinctly Austrian German. But when she was younger, she spoke in a northern/Prussian dialect. WE DON'T TALK ABOUT THIS. She also knows snatches and phrases in various other languages, but she's not one of those people who is great at this stuff ffff.
- Hungary has the ability to appear anywhere there is yaoi going on with a camera. Anywhere. Anywhere.
[Affection]Hungary tends to be a pretty affectionate person!! She's happy to hug anyone who is upset or even as a greeting, and is fine with friendly platonic touches (like for example, a backpat or something, even a kiss on the cheek in greeting). She's a lot more unsure about romantic affection unless it's from Austria, but it depends on the context a little bit. She's a romantic at heart so if you're like "I've always secretly loved you!!" and then kiss her she'll be touched! …Just politely uninterested. If you grope her or anything like that, expect a boot to your face. :|
She tends to be pretty open with the people she likes, as mentioned, but romantically it's… complicated. Despite her deep love of romance and "maiden's heart" and all that, she for the most part is emphatically not interested in romance right now personally. So if someone falls for her she'll just try to gently reject them. The exception is Austria but even with him her feelings are complicated! But he's her ex-husband and even after the divorce she's still very fond of him and extremely protective of him… even if she didn't want anything to do with him romantically she'd be protective! She kind of hated him for a while but she never really fell out of love, really, even if she kind of is unsure at times! So basically it would take a lot to get her to even consider dating anyone but him… a whole lot… I wouldn't bother honestly ffff. BUT BEING BESTIES AND HUGGING IS TOTALLY COOL.
[Fighting]Hungary is more physical than she appears and probably would secretly kind of like a good fistfight lol. She's not the type to fight just for the sake of it though, but if she has a reason/Austria's someone's honor to defend, she's there. She's very good in a fight, both armed and unarmed, but I'm not against having her be injured either! If you wanna do something, just drop me a line!
[Other Permissions]I'm pretty much fine with whatever! Hungary doesn't have a lot of secrets to be mind-read, so feel free to assume you can-recognizing her as a country and telling her about her future is also great! The only kind of 4th walling I don't like is the "you're a character in a comic!" kind, even though Hetalia itself bends the 4th wall a bit. Leaning on it is fine, just don't break it outright please.
[Other Facts]Her hairpin represents Lake Balaton!
Also Hungary has the habit of nicknaming everyone. Hungarian has a huge set of diminutives (like Russian does, although she wouldn't appreciate the comparison), and in Hetalia Hungary is also known for nicknaming her friends-Ita-chan/Italy, Raine/Ukraine, Po/Poland, etc. Obviously I'll adjust the nicknames slightly because she's not speaking Japanese, but yeah, cutesy names for everything.
[How To Pronounce]Néptánc = neep-tant.
Erzsébet = ercibet.
Héderváry = hellervary.
