Patrolling had its good points and its bad points; most of the bad points were ones that Keith was familiar with and able to handle, like the fact that they tended to the monotony. You didn't have a job that often involved sitting in a car with camera poised waiting for that one shot to present itself without an ability to cope with tedium.
There was the heat, but he was from California. Still, there was California, and then there was a tropical island with only one air-conditioned building in the whole area. So that's where Keith headed once his patrol was done, because it was thirsty work.
Also, he thought he might scavenge some food. He was getting used to this food for all business, although it had at first seemed a bit odd taking food from a fridge he didn't stock himself.
