The piano started up as she walked into the rec room, but Veronica didn't notice it - not until a female voice came in over it.

Whatever happened to Duncan?
He was a good boy, they say.
The girls all wanted him to dance with,
the boys to play, to play.
When the policemen came knocking,
she didn't know what to say -
except his shoes and socks were all gone.
It seems he ran away.

Oh, you fools, you fools!
Don't give in to fate!
If this is all we have to live for,
rage, my darling, rage!
Duncan, good for you -
sad but on your way.
Well, the army never turned his crank
but love sure made him brave.

She froze where she stood, letting the words sweep over her. It had been weeks since she'd really thought of Duncan, she realized guiltily. And where had this song been when he'd been the only thing on her mind?

Veronica sat down on the couch, feeling stupid and superstitious and more certain than she could explain that Duncan had found his way to Tabula Rasa.
