there's gotta be a morning after; [for Sam]

The first thing she felt was safe. Then came good. Then came consciousness.

The morning after - a period of time famed for its effects on short term memory and, in some situations, the digestive tract. While I don't feel any pressing need to kneel before the porcelain goddess, I do know something is up. Of course, that something might be the arms ( Read more... )

Sam had been awake for a while, but he'd been used to just lying in bed and keeping his eyes closed to pretend to sleep. Dean used to question him if he wasn't sleeping and during that long span of nightmares, faking it had become useful. When he felt her move, he shifted a little, hair falling over his forehead as he bent his head to rest his forehead against her temple.

"If you're gonna run off," he mumbled lazily, tired, but not upset or worried in any way, "I'm really gonna need some cookies to heal my pain."

And he just eased in and tugged her a bit closer.

He'd meant what he said. And yeah, he hadn't meant to let it all spill, but now that it had...so what? He felt that way. Dean was gone. And he had moved on. Scary as it was and as much as he desperately needed his brother, he had moved on and turned to a friend. And then had to go and fall for her, which hadn't been Plan A, but wasn't entirely a crappy Plan B.

Alright, so believing him had been the right move. At least, it looked that way. Caution and relief were duking it out and relief was winning by a landslide, the sense of being safe hitting her all over again. So that was what that felt like.

"We already covered this," Veronica murmured, reaching up give him a playful push, then letting her hand rest where it was. "No cookies. This whole running thing, it takes too much energy."

She never wanted to be the one to run, the one to leave - not physically. Tentatively, she was staying put emotionally, too.

He gave a quiet laugh, opening his eyes for the first time that day and he was way more glad than anything that when he saw her, he felt the same as always, that it wasn't some trick of his emotions. "I don't know," he admitted. "I hear there's good ways of expending energy." Leaning in, he kissed her slowly. "Like this one," was mumbled softly against her lips.

"Mm, I like that one," she said softly, tipping her head up to kiss him tenderly. Putting her arms around him, she smiled against his mouth, then pulled back scant millimeters. "It doesn't involve running. Or baking." They fit together, lying here, and the rightness of it was putting her at ease again.
