Veronica never minded spending time with Samantha. Even when the Halperts didn't have something else to occupy them, she liked borrowing the girl to babysit a while. Having used the afternoon to get a few things done, Pam had been walking out of the Compound and in the direction of her hut when she spotted Veronica with Sam on the playground, and couldn't help heading towards them. "Yeah, she's a piece of work like that," Pam laughed, though sounded nothing but fond in doing so. Where Sam was concerned, anything else was an impossibility, no matter how trying it could sometimes be, but she supposed that was normal. Stopping near the merry-go-round, she shook her head a little. "If you want a break from cart horse duties, let me know, I don't mind taking over if she's started wearing you out."

"No, I'm good," Veronica said immediately, raising her free hand in protest, but as she did so, Sam let go of her, leaping from her seat to wrap herself around her mother's leg. "Or not. You can't say she doesn't know her own mind."

"Mama, you ride, too," Sam insisted, patting awkwardly at the merry-go-round as best she could without letting go.
