Duncan heard the song from the kitchen, and he abandoned his quest to find his wayward best friend and headed into the rec room. Sure, Duncan had caught Logan and Dick googling their names millions of times (and Dick's came up with some interesting ones), but Duncan had known he didn't want to see what the search engine had to say about him in relation to his father, and so, he never knew there was a song, much less one so painfully about him.
When he rounded the corner, he dropped the mango in his hand. He would have recognized that slight frame, anywhere.
"Oh my God, Veronica," he whispered, entirely awestruck. Logan had mentioned she was around, but there she was, and looking as beautiful as the day he was forced to leave her.
Lost in her thoughts, Veronica was justifiably freaked out when someone randomly launched himself at her; there weren't many guys on the island she would even let hug her right now, and launching? Out of the question -
"Duncan?" Her voice caught softly as she realized whose arms were suddenly around her. "Oh my God, Duncan!" It wasn't the brightest thing to say, but it was hard to care at the moment. Veronica hugged him tightly. "When did you get here?"
"About a week ago. Before the big hurricane mess," he said, breathing her in through her hair. It felt so good, feeling the way she fit into his arms, again. No one could compare to her, no one had, and no one would. He knew letting her go was the furthest thing from his mind.
"I knew it. I knew that we didn't have an ending." He smiled.
"I'm so glad you didn't have to show up in the middle of that." It was hard to care that they were in the rec room where anyone could see; and the compound had been much more crowded since the start of the storm. Let anyone see.
She shook her head at him with a smile. "Endings are out of the question for us," she agreed. "So people've explained all this to you? What's the last thing you remember at home?" It was important to establish whens and wheres, to find out how much he knew.
