I've got to stop my mind working overtime.

It wasn't like the last week had been hard -- just stressful. The year had started off with a bang and a whimper both, a heavy disappointment when its first moments had been so pleasant. But who was surprised? You couldn't have everything ( Read more... )

Keith liked the kitchen. The outdoors were nice, too, now that the weather was something approaching decent, but when inside he gravitated to the kitchen.

No possessed jukebox, no magic bookshelf. It was just a shame the coffee was so bad.

"Hi, sweetheart," he said, glancing up as Veronica entered and then pausing. She had that look on her face, the determined one that meant she was probably thinking things about bandaids and ripping. "How's the day?"

Great. It was like returning to the scene of the crime. Just earlier that day, she'd sat at that table right there and had a slice of cake that had been baked for a wedding that hadn't happened, and she'd felt a little relieved.

On the bright side, she was still doing pretty good about the urge to confess that seeing her dad was giving her these days. It was just a matter of being out of practice. She'd get it sooner or later.

"Better than yesterday," she said cautiously. Pouring a cup of bad coffee, she leaned back against the counter.

"Poor guy," Keith said, shaking his head slightly.

This referred both to the jilted ... groom, and possibly the non-jilted groom once Veronica had caught up with him. Very possibly, though; he didn't know how everything was going, there. He made a note to chat to Logan, sometime. As a fact-finding measure.

"I'd say the place seems to ... tropical, for that sort of unpleasantness, but back home was nice and sunny and we saw our share of it there, too." He shook his head again, had a sip of coffee.

"Yeah," Veronica said softly. She couldn't think about Logan now, though, eyes trained on her dad as she stirred a little sugar into her coffee. "I wanted to talk to you about that, actually."

She tapped the spoon against the rim of the cup and hesitated before diving right in. "You're from after me, which is one of the weirdest things I've had to say in a long time. So you know what happened. You know who caused the crash."
