I'm reading Cereus Blooms At Night for my Eng Lit class right now. It's kind of an unpopular book - not in the sense that it got bad reviews, but that it didn't really get much attention at all. I don't know why. When I first read an introduction to it, I was yawning and thinking there was no way Mootoo could make the whole "colonialism = rape"

That's hilarious... I had the same thing in my high school World Religions class; when we covered Buddhism or Hinduism or even Judaism, this ultra conservative, ultra Christian guy would crack "pff, what freak really believes in this junk"-esque remarks, but would snap off the heads of anyone who got critical when we covered Christianity. Pretty fun to watch.
