There are times when brute force is acceptable, and this is one of them. For a really stuborn oil filter, drive a screwdriver right through the filter, out the other end, offset crom the center. The longer the better. Use that leverage to get the filter off.

When replacing the filter, put some oil on the gasket with your finger, then put the filter on no more then 1/4 turn past hand tight.

Thanks for the advice, but unfortunately the filter doesn't stick out far enough from the engine to drive a screwdriver through it sideways. I used a cap-style oil filter wrench and tried turning it with a big box wrench, and couldn't budge it. The original owner must have really torqued it down. :(

When you get to the shop, bite the bullit and get whatever oil filter wrench the mechanic uses. I have a vast collection of cheap useless filter wrenches of all kinds. I finally bought expensive wrenches and that solved my problems.

What sucks is that now there are like 5 different size filters out there for cars and bikes, no more universal tools.
