There's a snowball rolling down this hill.
I'm really digging Starcraft II. It fuels many of my competitive instincts - Magic was doing this when I was in boulder, but my local friends actually care about SCII sometimes, and not so much Magic.
As is my nature, I'm going out of my way to absorb any media related to yon interesting hobby. Strategy videos online, coverage of tournaments, whatever. GLHF.tv, the day[9] daily, Husky Starcraft and HD Starcraft on youtube, I've been gobbling it all up.
So
bronzite had this Starcraft lan/tournament party last weekend, and in the wake of it, he or somebody said "hey Mike, we've got all these replays, maybe you should do some commentaries of them for the web. We have the technology, and you have a grasp of what will fly with the game's community"
Which brings me to one problem - I've got between nobody and very few to sit and talk with for hours about Starcraft - something that was pretty essential to my enjoyment of Magic. There are these rants and theories and conversations queuing up in my head waiting to happen, but I haven't been putting them out there because, well, I don't think the people reading my LJ and/or my Google Buzz care too much about the topic.
Anyway, with some prodding from
bronzite and
royal_rooter I sat down with a microphone and a replay from last weekend and recorded a play-by-play the other night. A few people have seen it in its rough form, but after I get the raw data back from
bronzite tomorrow, I'll polish it a bit and put it up where more people can see.
So, the snowball of MikeXIV as Starcraft 2 talking head is really picking up steam. If it goes anyplace further, I'll likely create a brandy new blog and/or youtube feed, both so that friends who don't care don't see it, and so that the outside world can look without seeing my day-to-day crap.
lingering questions:
To the starcraft II community as it currently exists, me and those I play with (ok, Syl excepted) are someplace below "bad play". Nobody is going to be watching me for high-level strategy. Who is going to go watch some unknown guy do play-by-play of ultra-newbie starcraft games? Who is my audience, what is my message?
What the heck do I call myself? My starcraft account is MikeXIV, so that is a factor. So far i've killed all my ideas for either being specific to one of the game's 3 races, or for being painfully focused on the fact that I'm looking at replays of "bad games". Examples of names I've thought of and discarded are
BestOfBronzeLeague, fourteenHatch, comsatTV, comsatOnline,
What is my message? The first video I made is a mix of jokes at the player's expense, light strategic discussion, and dead air.
bronzite and
royal_rooter were giggling the whole time, which is a good sign, but not sure anyone besides people who know me (or people who know the players I was mocking) will find it entertaining. I'll ask for more feedback when that is available to view, but to those of you who care, what do you think I could provide that you would want to watch / read?
