Steve Irwin

Tonight Denton is replaying his 2003 interview with Steve Irwin on enough Rope. It is excellent...

I went to the states in 1998 and when people found out I was an "Aussie" would often mention something about the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. I was like who the hell is Steve Irwin??

I actually saw that interview on a plane, on one of my many trips between Brisbane and Sydney in 2003. It was a brilliant dialogue, and I found my opinion on Steve Irwin forever changed. I had previously thought of him as an aussie ocker taking advantage of the USA's fascination with the land of oz. But that interview changed my perspective of him dramatically. I will never forget his "I'm a wildlife warrior" speech, in which his passion for Australian fauna was plain for all to see. It is probably trite to say that he died doing what he loved, yet it is the only thing that comes to mind.

that interview really revealed his qualities. i like the way he didn't care that some people thought he was a bit of a knob. he was too busy caring about reptiles etc! his absurdly flamboyant energy reminds me of nikolai... it's like he had the enthusiasm and excitement level of a 3 year old... it's a wonderful thing.
