I was interested in what you said about River and the Reavers. I went to see Serenity with a group of friends who are also big Buffy fans and we were talking about River being a vampire slayer of the future. This is a theory that we had in general, particularly given the scene where they open the door and find her standing there holding the two weapons, arms out---very reminiscent of Buffy.
So there are a few people in DC agreeing with your theory!
Hmmm I never thought of River as a vampire slayer of sorts but yeah it makes sense. We know Joss is big on the whole "girl power" thing.
But what I mean mostly is that since the Miranda incident happened about 12 years prior which would be just about around the time River joined that academy [at least I think but I'm not that sure about the timelines] then maybe the Alliance made them fighters specifically to combat the Reavers.
