Regarding number 1, yes, if it hadn't been Chuck Bass it would definitely have been a female character because I think there's maybe one other bloke in my top ten. (It would probably have been Cristina Yang, for the record. Or maybe Veronica Mars. Or Aeryn Sun. Man, I'm glad I didn't have to pick.)
Regarding number 2, I was tempted to use that gif of Phoebe saying "this is brand new information" but decided that was needlessly sarcastic. I can't even begin to tell you the amount of vitriol I've had hurled my way because I not only love the character of Chuck Bass, but don't hide that fact. I get that people hate him, and I understand why, I really, really do, but what I don't understand is why some people (especially on Tumblr, don't get me started, OMG) behave like he's the devil incarnate compared to, say, Loki, whom it's apparently just fine to find fascinating, and that people who like him are clearly damaged or stupid.
Oh my god, this was glorious. I almost had to stop midway through to get stuff done, because I was taking my time and savoring it. Ahaha. Yes, to all of it. I mean, except for you and maybe a couple other people, most fans on my flist seemed to really hate Chuck. And I get that, I do, but I can also tell by their posts that they were seeing a different show than I was. Not wrong! Just... different

I am so glad you came and read this. The whole time I was writing it I was thinking, god, no one but surreallis is EVER going to wade through all of this.
I can also tell by their posts that they were seeing a different show than I was. Not wrong! Just... different. Yeah, the one that had me talking to my screen was a commentary on the end of season 4, where Chuck tells Blair to go back to Louis. The poster read it as Chuck waiting until after he'd slept with Blair again and then dumping her on his terms to get back at her for dumping him when she got engaged. And I was just... staggered, because, I mean, that reading exists, so there has to be basis for it, I suppose, but it's just so far removed from what I took away from that episode. After all, the speech Blair gave Chuck about how their love would pull them back in no matter how hard they fought against it was basically the same speech she gave at the start of season 6 to Serena where she told her that they were stuck with being friends with each other. I didn't see people

I'd completely forgotten that I prompted this!! YAY! I make the best decisions.
And what a reply, seriously! This is fantastic. And kinda makes me want to put myself through the alleged ordeal that is watching Gossip Girl!
This is the kind of word vomit I can conjure at a moment's notice re. Izzie Stevens and/or Walter White, so you do NOT need to fear judgement of any kind! And particularly not of the 'you love a character everyone else hates' type, what is wrong with you? kind because, well, see above!
Thank you for indulging me! I will keep you posted on whether I end up watching any!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I was worried you'd be like, FFS, I just wanted to know who it was.
kinda makes me want to put myself through the alleged ordeal that is watching Gossip Girl!
DON'T. Seriously, I really do mean it. Don't. Although if you do, try to stop at the end of season 2, because although there are some excellent bits in each of the other 4 seasons, it's not really worth wading through the dross of bad writing to get to them.
If I'd started writing this earlier in the day IT WOULD HAVE BEEN LONGER. Word vomit about Chuck Bass is probably my favourite thing. Surreallis and I used to have massively, ridiculously long comment conversations after each episode. They were great. I miss them. Probably more than I miss the show. Although not more than I miss having fresh Chuck Bass in my eyeballs each week.
Ahahaha, and that's only a list of the terribad things that happened to him, not all the other crazy stuff.
It's worth noting that we only find out about item 1 in season two, and that's when items 2 and 3 happen as well. 4-7 happen in season 3, 8 in season 4, 9-13 all happen in the clusterfuck that was season 5, and then 14 in season 6.
Then he kind of lets his father fall off a rooftop (after his father tried to throw him off it, having failed to kill him in a plane crash), Blair witnesses it and they have to get married to invoke spousal privilege so that he doesn't get tried.
IT'S THE MOST RIDICULOUS FUCKING SHOW THAT EVER HAD THE NERVE NOT TO CALL ITSELF A SOAP OPERA.

Yeah, that happened in the final two episodes. By the end it really was getting to be some kind of cracky shitstorm of awfulness, but oddly enough, there was still some genuinely good stuff in there. Not much, but yeah.
I believe that you have just proven that lists are THE VERY GREATEST THING IN THE HISTORY OF EVER. Thanks for that.
Also, THIS POST! I love it. I love your Chuck meta - it is fantabulous. And I am in complete agreement with you about the fact that a lot of the problems that people have with Chuck are actually because of what they perceive Blair's problems with Chuck should be. Also there's a lot of Dan/Blair fans who are just pissed that Chuck/Blair was clearly endgame from the very start.
I have less of a problem with the stuff from the pilot than I do with any of Chuck trying to buy a hotel using Blair. That was pretty much the lowest of the low. And, like, I could forgive Blair for never going back there after that, but watching Chuck's spiral afterwards was all things fabulous.
I'm not going to put myself through it again though!

You're right. It was. I'm not going to try to talk you out of that position, because, well, I mostly agree with it. BUT. I would like to offer some items that may reconcile you to its happening (not that I'm reconciled to it, but, y'know).
I think Blair made it clear at the time that it wasn't the idea of sex for a hotel that upset her as much as the fact that Chuck manipulated her into doing it, although it was muddied later by the writers having other characters and (once) Blair refer to the problem as "pimping her out for a hotel". Don't get me wrong, pimping her out was wrong, and she was upset, angered, horrified, etc. by that, but it was the lack of honesty that really did it for her. Because she'd done a similar thing to Chuck and he'd been devastated, and they'd agreed not to manipulate one another any more. She

Possession. I was going to say that Blair obviously did feel like he was treating her that way, because he was, but without even realising it. You actually see the moment it hits him, when he overhears her saying it to Russell Thorpe at the end of season 4. He'd managed to go a whole year without realising that that was what he'd done. There's a line that gets quoted too often in the fandom, where Chuck says "I know you better than I do myself" and it's true, but not in the way that most people seem to think. He does know her, probably better than anyone else does, but he hardly knows himself at all.
APPARENTLY THERE IS NO END TO MY ABILITY TO FANWANK ABOUT CHUCK BASS. Well, there is, it's the comment length of 4300 characters, but you know what I mean.

Iiiinteresting. Who were you expecting, if you don't mind my asking?
(Because, in all honesty, Chuck Bass consumes my brain pretty much all the time, and no one else had a look-in.)

1.) I expected the answer to be a female character and
2.) Generally speaking most of fandom hates Chuck Bass
make this answer a surprise for me.
