So, I heard back from BYU last weekend and just got an email from USU today about both of my two (2) applications to graduate school.
BYU has accepted me but wants me to retake 2 of my classes (I got a C and C+ in them), and they are not offering me anything in the way of funding. This means that I would have to pay my own tuition, do my research for free (or close to it), and work on top of that to make enough to pay the tuition.
Major Pros: All our friends are here in the area, my brother and sister will both be down here at BYU next year, we wouldn't have to move far (we're likely going to move out of this apartment when our contract is up anyway), Bel would be able to keep her job.
Major Cons: Expensive. Tuition for a graduate student is around $2500 a semester. Retaking classes is really crappy-- especially those two classes. I do not currently know how possible it is to make that much money and not work during the school-year (which I am not willing to do).
USU has also accepted me and has offered me a $12,000 a year Assistantship. They don't want me to retake any of my classes, either.
Major Pros: Money-- less expensive, plus Assistantship. Tuition is around $1700 a semester. No class retaking.
Major Cons: It's in Logan, 3 hours north of Salt Lake. We don't know anybody up there. Bel would not be able to keep her job and may have some trouble finding one up there, depending on the size of the city.
So, yeah. It's a bit of a hard decision, as you can maybe guess. We would really like to stay close to friends and family, not to mention the convenience that staying in Provo would offer, but on the other hand, I don't know how much of a financial problem that would cause.
At any rate, I need to get to studying for that test that I've been putting off this afternoon. I finally finished and passed off the Project o' Doom (Webcrawler) earlier today, but am not pleased about the resultant situation. Test o' Doom tomorrow, and I have not as yet studied for it since all my free time up until about 3:15 this afternoon was dumped into said Project o' Doom. Plus I have a growing headache, which is not conducive to productive studying.
Don't you just love college?
