Digital comics and the reality of smartphones

Nobody actually reads comic books on iPhones or iPod touch or Android phones. I shouldn't say "nobody." After all, I do. But apart from me, nobody reads comics on smartphones.

Evidence: none of these comics are comfortable to read on a phone. They might be comfortable to read on a tablet such as the iPad, Nook or what-have-you. But cell phones ( Read more... )

I imagine when you've spent so much time mastering the power of page layouts, the idea of restricting yourself to index-card-size segments doesn't appeal too strongly. Although I guess it could feel constricting or liberating, depending where an artist was at - I do know someone who draws longer comics on index cards a lot now.

Not that the artist's feelings matter - if the Big Two wanted their comics to work on smartphones, I'm sure they'd make it happen. I think tablets started catching on too soon after smartphones for that transistion, though.
