2014 is the year when I finally started reading Discworld. I had read the first three books in high school, but I'd never got further than that. I have just finished Night Watch and it is probably my favorite Watch story so far.
Sam Vimes is my favorite character after Death and this book is all about him. There aren't any subplots involving Carrot or any of the other Watch characters (whom I love dearly, but not as much as Vimes). I love this, because Pratchett got to focus on Vimes completely and that gave us some wonderful insight into him.
I feel like this book was much more serious than previous ones. Whenever Vimes is involved, there is always social commentary and cynicism, but this one took that to the next level. Vimes is such a depressing character at times, but so interesting. I love the part where he thinks about Sybil in his third thought, after thinking of staying in the Watch in the past as a mere soldier and how happy that would make him. It is heartwrenching.
The plot was also okay: a bit simple, but that left room for more character introspection, which is what I loved most about it.
Honorable mention for Nobby Nobbs as a child. It was adorable.
