There's a wonderful Ben Edlund interview where he discussed the headache of planning a tv show, "sitting in a coffee shop with my sketchpad, trying to map out a story arc, chopping up five years of my life into 23 friggin' episodes apiece."

Exactly. From what I understand Kripke had the plot arc already planned out through Swan Song, so I don't envy the writers who had to try to figure out how the hell to keep things going after what was supposed to be "the end."
