Kit built a rolling fire in the fireplace. He dragged the settee over to it and an extra chair, with an exaggerated sigh sat down to wait for his friends to return. Rose found a couple of big floor pillows and lay down on the rug by the fire in front of the settee to wait with Kit for his friends to return. Rose worked up the courage to ask, “Who are they really?”
Kit sighed, “I guess you could call Jacob my brother. We both have the same sire. Maggie is a very old friend.”
“How long have you known them?” They had never really talked much about Kit’s past. She wasn’t sure he would answer her.
“Maggie’s is much older than I am, and very powerful. Jacob is only a little older than me; we were fledglings together before Maggie dragged him off to explore parts unknown.” Kit senesced what she was afraid too ask. “You want to know about the kiss don’t you?” Maggie nodded, “I’ve always been attracted to both women and men. As a human I would never admit it. After I was changed Jacob wouldn’t take no for an answer; and that’s all I’m going to tell you about it.”
“I was beginning to think you were unable to… um”
“Have sex? Yes, vampires can have sex. It’s best with another of our own kind. Blood is involved, so a human will usually be killed before they change. I don’t want to kill a lover and I’ve never cared much for meaningless sex. Though there are plenty of us that do.”
“Is that why you never made a pass at me?”
Kit chucked, he didn’t get to be over two hundred years old and not learn something about women. “Rose, you are a very beautiful woman. And if things weren’t the way they are, I’d happily take you to bed.”
For reasons she didn’t completely understand that statement made Rose feel better. She was tired and the pillow soft. The fire warmed her skin while the flames talked softly to themselves in the language of fire…

Jacob and Maggie returned a few hours latter. Kit greeted them at the door, keeping his voice low, not ready to wake Rose up yet.
“What’s going on with you Kit? It’s not like you to go all territorial on us over a girl.” Jacob grumbled after Kit had closed the door.
“Rose is different.”
“You’re not thinking of bring her over are you?” Maggie would not believe that of him.
“No, I’m not bringing her over. That’s not why she’s’ different. She can’t be changed.” They looked at him like he was crazy. “Don’t’ look at me like that, it’s true. Come on, I’ll wake her up and tell you the story form the beginning.”

“Dinner at hand, how convenient. Even without her picking up you dirty shirts Kit, she’s valuable. You’ve got something others are going to want. The problem is you only have the one.” Maggie declared.
“If others find out, you could find yourself challenged to keep her.” Jacob was concerned for his friend. Kit was strong for his age. But there were a lot of older vampires who were stronger. Rose blanched at the statement, she hadn’t thought about anything like that. Apparently neither had Kit; a worried expression drew itself on his face.
“Maybe there are more.” Kit offered hopefully.
“It’s possible. No one has ever looked before. Most of us would have just killed her and be done.” Seeing Rose shiver Maggie apologized. “Sorry Rose that’s just the way it is.”
Kit and Maggie were on the settee and Jacob was in the chair across from them. Rose was on the floor with the big pillow between the chair and the settee in front of the fire.
“Well then we look for more humans like her.” Jacob got up and stood in front of Maggie. “I haven’t been on a quest in a long time.” Jacob held his hand in invitation to Maggie, “How about it, Maggie, care to join me on a search for the elusive Humanas immuninus?”
Maggie and took his hand, “Of course, you fool. I wouldn’t miss it.” Instead of letting him pull her up she pulled him down on top of her, laughing. “Besides you’ll need my help.”
After some poking and tickling Jacob made himself comfortable lying on the settee, with his head on Maggie’s lap and his but on Kit’s, and his feet dangling over the arm of the small sofa. “So where do we start?”
“And how can we tell if someone is immune?”
“We can trace Rose’s family; look for cousins or aunts or uncles?”
“Good idea. Where is your family Rose.”
“I don’t know any of my family. There was only me and my mother.”
“Then I’ll start with a talk with your mother” Jacob said,
Seeing apprehensive look on Roses face Jacob added. “I’m not going to hurt you mother, Rose.” He promised, “She’d be too old anyway.” He added thoughtlessly.
Maggie shoved Jacob off the settee, dumping his butt on the floor next to Rose. “You can be an insensitive boob sometime, Jacob.”
Unconcerned at having been dumped on the floor, Jacob helped himself to half of Roses pillow and stretched out getting comfortable. “How are we going to know? If we find a cousin how are we going to know if they are immune? Kit’s way could take months.”
Maggie lowed herself off the settee and unceremoniously shoved Jacob out of the way to take his place next to Rose. She turned Rose to face her, studying the girl, probing at her with more than just her eyes, letting her extra senses tell her what they could. Rose forced herself not to shrink from the uncomfortable scrutiny. “I have a hunch that it will be the cat slit eyes that are the key. They are very rare, but not a totally unheard of occurrence.” She smoothed Rose’s hair away from her face. “And the white hair, most unusual. Very pretty though.”
Jacob sat back on the settee and pulled Kit close to him, letting his hand rest on Kit’s thigh.
“I can put the word out to the less desirable population that I’m looking for leads to people with cat eyes and/or white hair. Offer an award, see what happens.” Kit offered.
“But still, how are we going to know for sure without taking weeks.”
Kit offered “Test them the quick way. I told you I wasn’t sure about Rose until I fed her a taste of my blood.”
Rose paled, she didn’t remember that, and would rather not have known. Maggie gave her one last pat on the cheek before moving to lean against Jacob’s legs so he could stroke her hair with his free hand.
“How many do you think we can find?”
“If we find any.”
Know one spoke for a while, each lost thought. Jacob was running his finger through Kit’s hair. Kit was nearly purring.
“I have a dumb question.” Jacob said trying to lighten the mood. “If, when we find more like Rose, what are we going to call them?”
“What are you talking about?”
“Well, when you checked in, who did you tell the innkeeper Rose was?”
“O told him she was my housekeeper. That’s no secret.”
“But if we find another, they aren’t going to be housekeepers. What do we call them?
“……”
“Cups? Fountains? Challises?”
“No, no, and no.”
“Wine press?”
“Yuck, what you want to write dreadful horror novels now?”
“Providers?”
“Maybe”
“Attendants?”
“No”
“Slaves?”
“Might be the truth, but it’s not a good title. Besides slaves have a tendency to rebel.”
“Servants?”
“Servants?”
“Personal servants?”
“That works ‘servants’.”
“Could work.”
“Sounds good to me, what do you think Rose? Could you be my personal servant?”
Sarcasm just dripped from Rose’s replay. “I thought I already was.”
Jacob licked his finger and drew an invisible line. “Score one for Rose.”
Kit pretended not to be amused. “It’s getting late Rose and you have a lot to do tomorrow. Take the small room and go on to bed.”
Rose yawned and headed for bed, but not before getting a last word. “Easer to talk about me like I’m not here, if I’m not here.” She said before loudly before firmly shutting the door behind her. Kit cracked up, Jacob scored her another point.

After Rose was gone, Jacob asked Kit. “Dose she taste any different?”
“She does now. Not when I fist started feeding from her. That’s why I was so curious, I can taste my essence in her blood, but it doesn’t have any effect on her.”
“But it is having an effect on her Kit,” Maggie replied, “How often you are feeding from her.”
“Every three or four nights. Why?”
“A normal human couldn’t take that much blood lose that often and not get sick, with or with out the vampire essences. She told us herself, she only feels a slightly weekend and only for a day so after you feed. That’s not a normal. She is physically stronger than she knows and she is resistive to the psychic powers we have. I won’t be surprised if, in the future, she is as empathic as you are.”
“She’s not immortal Maggie. She’s been with me two years in that time she has grown and matured.” Kit told her.
They watched the flames dance in the fire place for while each lost in their own thought. “I wonder if she would pass the gift to her children.” Maggie wondered aloud.
“I hadn’t thought of that.” Kit frowned, he wasn’t eager to have Rose with child. “Would it be better if the father also had the gift?”
“Probably.” Maggie confirmed “If we can find a male like her we can try. If we don’t find one, we can try with an ordinary man.”
“That sounds like a plan.” Jacob was pleased with the idea. Of course he was pleased, Kit thought, it wasn’t his servant they planed to get knocked up.
“If it works, then eventually we could have enough for anyone who wants one. It could take a while, but time is on our side.” Maggie said as she tugged Kit and Jacob down to the floor with her. “But this night is getting old, and I want both of you now!”

The M/M/F vampire smut will not be here. (But I will probably write it, just not here.)
