Folding Paper
Shine glared at the innocent little square of paper sitting on the table in front of him. All around him were little balls of crumpled little squares and an open origami book. He just wasn’t getting it.
Last night Joseph had absently folded a horse from a scrap of paper he’d found stuck in a magazine. Shine had been fascinated by the little creation, and after he’d picked up the dry-cleaning he’d stopped at the library for a book on origami.
Shine sighed and tossed another crumpled paper over his shoulder narrowly missing Joseph as he walked through the door. “Normally, throwing something at your master could get you a whole lot of hurt.” Shine jumped at the sound of Joseph’s voice. He’d been concentrating so long on the little squares of paper that he had not been aware the sun had set. “Since you didn’t know I was there I guess I can forgive you this time.” Joseph sounded more amused than angry; he wasn’t in any trouble if Joseph was teasing him. “What are you doing anyway?” he asked, leaning over Shine’s shoulder.
“I liked that little horse you folded last night, I wanted to fold one too. But I keep messing it up.” Even to himself he sounded a little forlorn.
“I learned how to fold a long, long time ago, before I was changed. I used to teach it to my little cousins to keep them occupied.” Joseph sat down on the other side of the table and picked up one of the square papers. “I can show you, if you’d like?”
