Joseph whistled while he walked to his car. The midnight showing of Goblet of Fire had just ended. It was the second time he’d seen it, and the music was stuck in his head. It was a mid-week showing, so there hadn’t been many people in the audience. The streets were empty at three am.
Knowing he was one of the few beings around that didn’t need to fear the dark. He’d taking a short cut down a dark alley. It smelled like garbage and piss and he was glad to have reached the other side unhindered just to be out of the smell.
There were only two cars left in the parking lot, his and a cop car. He could see that there was someone sitting in the cop car. For once, he was innocent of any wrong intent, so he continued to his car. As he got closer he could see that driver was a black woman, and it was someone he knew!
Roxy looked at her watch and then at a yellow post-it note in annoyance. “Finally” she said to herself when she saw a man walking towards the other car. She got out of the car to meet her appointment only to see that he man walking towards her was not S. Moore, but someone she already knew.
“Hey Roxy, long time, no see. When did you become a cop?” Joseph asked when he got closer to her.
“Hey yourself stranger.” She answered. “You been on a diet or something? I haven’t had a ‘reap’ from you in months.”
“Roxy, I’m not trying to make work for you, I don’t kill them until I have to, you know that.”
“Is that what you are doing here then?” She asked.
“Not this time. I just came out of the movie.” He could see she didn’t believe him. “Really, I’m not planning murder tonight.” Holding out his empty hands and trying to look innocent.
Roxy grunted and looked at the post-it note in her hand and then at her watch. “So you were not meeting anyone here?” She asked him again.
“No. I was just on my way home.” He said. He could understand her not believing him, especially after how they had met.
“Well fuck.” Roxy said, looking around the deserted parking lot. “I’ve got ten minutes to find an S. Moore and I don’t see anyone else. Do you see anyone around here?”
As a matter of fact Joseph did. “Over there.” He said, nodding his head towards the alley he’d just come through. “Shall we go see if he’s your appointment?” He said offering her his arm as though he was going to lead her onto a dance floor. Roxy ignored his arm but walked with him towards the alley.
Sure enough, when they got close to the alley a young man jumped out at them waving a knife around. His hand was shaking when he said, “Give me your money and no one gets hurt.” His eyes were wide and his body was vibrating from the drugs he was on.
”It can’t be this easy.” Roxy said to Joseph exasperated, he just shrugged. Roxy knocked the knife out of the man’s hand and held her gun under his nose.
“What kind of dumb-ass fool are you? Can’t you see I’m a cop?”
The man’s eyes crossed as he watched the end of the gun. “Yes Ma’am, I mean no Ma’am, please don’t hurt me Ma’am.” The man stammered, realizing he might have bitten off more than he could chew.
“What’s your name fool?” Roxy asked him.
“Steven Moore, Ma’am.” He stammered not taking his eyes off the gun.
“Well, Stevee, it’s your lucky night.” Roxy said at the same time holstering her gun and taking the guy by the shoulder, “I’m not in the mood to do paper-work tonight, so I’m going to let you go.” She turned the guy around and gave him a small push back up the alley, the man felt an odd tingling in his shoulder but ignored it as he stumbled away. “But you pull something this stupid again and you’ll be sorry.” She called after him.
Roxy saw a flickering on the roof from the corner of her eye. “Graveling” she thought and checked her watch, “One minute.” She said to Joseph.
Steven Moore had never been known for his smarts, so maybe it was in character that he had only taken a few steps away, before deciding he could take the couple anyway, pulling another knife out of his pocket he turned and started toward Roxy again. Joseph reacted instantly, dropping his fangs and letting his power surge around him like a cloak. Steven Moore looked upon death and turned to run away as fast as he could.
His foot slipped on a banana peal, his head hit the drain pipe. The drain pipe vibrated and loosened a brick from the molding around the top of the building. The brick fell and hit him on the head. Steven Moore was no more.
From behind her Roxy heard. “Wow, that’s so messed up man.” Steven Moore stood looking at his body. Roxy had seen a lot in her days, only shrugged, “I’ve seen weirder.”
“What are you with the fangs, dude?” Steven asked Joseph. Joseph couldn’t see him, but he did start searching through Steven’s wallet.
“He’s a vampire. What did you think he is fool?” Roxy said as if talking to a particularly slow five years old.
Joseph stood up and tossed the empty wallet on to the coups, there hadn’t been anything in it. That Roxy was talking to thin air as far as he could see didn’t worry him. “Hey Roxy, Can I buy you a cup of coffee when you’re done? I got a few more hours before sunup. You can tell me how you became a cop.”
“That would be right nice of you Joseph. I’d like that. Just let me get Mr. Tough Mugger here on his way, and I’ll meet you at the Waffle House.” She said taking Steven by the arm and dragging him out of the alley. “Come on Tough guy; let’s go find your light.”
Joseph waited till she was gone before he laughed and headed for the Waffle House to wait for his friend.
