“Okay, I’ve finished installing the patches in the school’s computers. We are now safe from any Y2K bugs.” Shawn Black said with satisfaction, pushing back his chair and giving his master a satisfied look.

“Well at least that’s one thing not to worry about.” Mathew Brock said as he watched Shawn close down the computer and lock up the office. The two men left the office on the first floor of the school and walking to their apartment in the bungalows at the back of the school grounds where the rest of the school’s staff was housed. Mathew wasn’t paying much attention to his surroundings. Shawn had noticed that his master seemed more depressed as the end of the year grew closer.

“The bus to take the kids into the city for the fireworks will be here tomorrow evening at 6:00 pm. Everyone is getting excited about the millennium celebration but you.” When Mathew just kept on walking, “It’s your fist turn of the millennium too. Aren’t you even a little excited?”

Mathew sighed, “Yes, I’m a little excited, but just a little. It’s just that all the fuss has been making me remember my first turn of the century.”

“What was it like?” Shawn asked, curious.

“I was fourteen years old. I didn’t know it was 1600, and I probably wouldn’t have understood if anyone had bothered to tell me. I just knew that the bonfires were especially bright and everyone got quite drunk that year. I would never have believed then that I would still be around to see 1700. That fourteen year old boy didn’t have any idea of how long a hundred years is. There is a lot of ‘remember when’ and ‘look how we’ve changed’ stuff in the media lately. It’s reminding me of old times and old friends, people and places that I miss and will never see again.”

The two men stopped at the front door of their apartment and listened to the sound of the night around them for a few moments. “I suppose that could make you a little melancholy,” Shawn said opening the door so they could go in. “Is that why you volunteered to stay here with the younger students tomorrow? I was afraid we were going to have to make the adults draw straws or something to see who had to stay behind.”

Mathew laughed at that, “Yes. I know everyone wants to go, but for some reason I just don’t want to be in the middle of all that energy this year. If I stay then everyone else can go and have a good time. I’ll fix popcorn and sodas and let the youngsters bring down blankets and pillows to the common room and watch everything on tv. I have a box of sparklers for the ones that manage to stay awake to midnight.”

“I’m not sure you didn’t take the better deal. That sounds a lot more restful than trying to ride herd on sixty kids and adults amidst the biggest party of the millennium.”

“Too late, I’m not trading now.”

“Spoil sport.” Mathew just laughed at him.

Shawn was leaving for his own rooms when Mathew called him back. “Shawn, may I have a moment of your time please?” He wondered what he wanted. Mathew had fed from him the night before and it was uncommon for him to feed more than every three or four days. When he returned to his Master’s side he was opening a bottle of thirty year old single malt scotch. He chose two crystal shot glasses and poured some in both, then handed one to Shawn. “I’d do this tomorrow but you’re going to be too busy. I would like you to drink a toast with me.” He held up the little glass, Shawn did the same, “To James Ross, Markus Bowman, Tim Blackly, Polly, Annie and Charles. Also Peter Browning and John Cramer, you have not been forgotten. Salute.” With that they drank the shots. The scotch was a smooth fire that spread and dissipated throughout their bodies.

The somber moment passed and Mathew said, “If I forget to tell you tomorrow, Happy New Year.”

“Thank you and a Happy New Year to you as well.”
