The original of this prompt was written over a year ago. I was just getting started with the world (and with writing for fun), I like this version much better. And Thanks to
deadwood for proofreading for me.
It rained hard all afternoon. Kat had come over in the morning on his motorcycle and had beaten the rain by minutes. An hour later, the streets were flooded and the rain showed no signs of stopping any time soon. The new weatherman predicted the storm would last well into tomorrow.
Kat and Shine spent the day curled around each other watching old movies on cable TV, eating pizza, drinking beer and generally ignoring the rain outside until it was time for Kat to leave for work. He argued that he needed to go to work, but his secret reason for wanting to leave was that it had only been a few weeks since Shine’s Master, Joseph, had literally showed Kat his fangs and he was leery of the vampire. Sunset was close, and the gray outside was getting noticeably darker.
They were standing inside of the open front door letting the cold air in and the rain sheeting off the roof of the porch. Shine had a hold of Kat’s bike helmet and wouldn’t let him have it, even though he was trying to tug it out of Shine’s hands. “It’s raining too hard out there. This is not weather for a motorcycle.” Shine argued.
“I’ll be fine. My leathers are waterproof.”
“It’s too dangerous. The roads are flooded.”
“I have to go to work, Shine.”
“In this rain there won’t be any customers. They can do without you tonight.”
The argument might have gone on longer except that Joseph chose that moment to enter the room. He ignored the young men and went to look out the picture window in the living room. Having clearly only just woken up, he gave a big yawn (with fangs) and ran his hands through his hair. He was wearing plaid pajama bottoms that threatened to slip off his hips and little else. While he was standing at the window, the lightening and thunder that the weatherman had predicted all day finally arrived.
“Blegh, it’s not a fit night for man or monster out there tonight,” he said, turning to the two men still standing in front of the open door during a thunder storm. “I’m not going anywhere, and neither should you, Kat.” He closed the drapes, blocking out the darkness beyond. He looked at Shine, letting him know that even if he wasn’t going out tonight he wasn’t planning to go hungry. Shine nodded, not the least bit surprised that Joseph would be feeding from him tonight; he’d expected it was going to happen as soon as the rain started.
Kat was still trying to get his helmet from Shine, who still wasn’t letting it go. The flash of fangs and the look that had passed between servant and master hadn’t put him at ease. Joseph looked him in the eyes and said, “Kat stay. You are safer here tonight than out there.” Outside, another flash of lightening illuminated the flooded road and the pouring rain and convinced him at last that maybe Shine and Joseph were right.
“Okay, I’ll stay,” he said hesitantly, and Shine beamed triumphantly and quickly shut the door before he could change his mind. “Can I use your phone, Mr. Masterson? I’ll need to call the shop and let them know I’m not coming.”
“Of course. You know where it is. And you can call me Joseph.”
“Thank you sir, umm Joseph,” Kat said on his way to the phone in the kitchen. Joseph made himself comfortable in a big leather easy chair in the living room. He waited for Shine and Kat to get back to the living room before asking, “What movies did you rent?”
For a while, it was just three men watching a movie on a rainy night and Kat was able to forget for a little while that Joseph wasn’t human. There was beer and popcorn and rude or silly comments about the movie.
After awhile Kat lost interest in the movie and his attention wandered to Joseph. He took the time to really look at the vampire. He looked harmless enough. He had brown hair and brown eyes and his skin was very pale but not deathly white. He knew from experience that Joseph’s always-handsome face could be dark and menacing. But right then he looked relaxed and while he watched a movie on a rainy night. Then he noticed that Joseph was still in his pajamas and though he had added a bathrobe and slippers the picture, it just didn’t jive with the conventional idea of what a vampire should look like. Maybe it was the beer, but he chuckled out loud, getting both of the other men’s attention. “The movie’s not that funny, what are you laughing at?” Shine said asked poking him in the ribs.
“It’s just the old joke,” Kat answered. “If someone had told me a month ago I’d be watching movies and drinking beer with a vampire wearing plaid pajamas, I’d have never believed them.”
Joseph chuckled too. “Life is stranger than fiction.”
“A vampire is supposed to rise gracefully from his coffin hidden in the secret room in the basement of his mansion, already dressed in a tux and cape ready to go out and stalk and seduce beautiful young virgins.”
Joseph just laughed, and Shine spoke up. “Well, the windows of his room are bricked in and there are locks on the inside of his door.”
“Is there a coffin in it?” Kat asked, pretty sure now that there was not.
“No, but he does have a huge antique canopy bed with black velvet drapes.”
“What about the tux?” Kat tried not to snicker.
Joseph laughed, “I only slept in my tux once, and it was an emergency. Right now it’s in the back of my closet, still in the bag from the drycleaners and next to my hiking boots.”
“And the virgins?” Kat just had to ask trying not to laugh.
Shine snickered and wiggled an eyebrow at him, “You can attest that I’m no virgin.”
Joseph laughed, “Have you tried finding a virgin over the age of sixteen lately? I’d starve!”
Kat decided that it was time to stop Shine’s giggles and tickling him seemed to be the best method. That led to a minor wrestling match that ended with Shine on the floor and Kat on top of him. He stopped tickling and started kissing him instead. “Definitely not a virgin,” Kat whispered in his ear.
Exasperated, Joseph tossed a pillow at them. “Get a room, you two.” This started Shine laughing again.
Before Joseph could toss more pillows at them, the phone rang. Shine wiggled out from under Kat and went to get it before Kat could tickle him some more.
“Masterson residence.”
“Shine? That you?”
“Yes…”
“It’s me, Mike!”
“Mike! Wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve heard your voice.”
“So write fewer e-mails and pick up the phone more often.”
“Phones work both ways my friend. So why am I getting a call?”
“Well actually I’m calling to see if your older half is there. Morgan and I are in a bit of a jam with the storm. It’s closed our route home and all the good hotels are filling up fast.”
“Yes, he’s here. I’ll give him the phone.”
A few minutes later, Joseph handed Shine back the phone. “Here, give your friend directions to the house. I’d better go get some proper clothes on if we are having overnight guests.”
