Asking the landlords to change the locks doesn't seem an unreasonable course of action, if you're not comfortable with the neighbour having access to your place.
In this case, even if he isn't mentally unstable, he's still got a problem with his stability while drunk. I'm sure he'll be drunk again sometime, so I'd highly recommend either changing the locks or asking the landlord to get the key back from him. Of course, even if the landlord does obtain a key from him, there's no real assurance that he doesn't have a copy somewhere... so, yeah, definitely get that lock changed, and soon.
Looking into his overall mental health and history of disturbances would be a good thing to do. Make sure to ask the landlord about it especially so that, if it happens again, they'll already be aware of the problems you've had with him. If he gets noisy like that again, I'm sure he'll be violating more than a few of the points on his tenancy agreement.
