In the beginning, there was D&D, and it was good. Okay, it was alright. Then came AD&D, and it actually was good. Along followed a host of imitators, eventually leading to Nethack. This is why I stopped with 3.0, went grudgingly to 3.5, then stopped.

In other news, I found a game online ("stone soup") that looks pretty much like Nethack, but I can't tell if it's a precursor or a future generation of it.

If you're taking recommendations, ADOM is really fun and much harder than NetHack. And it has more than one quest, and some sort of storyline.
