My promising Barbarian game ended in a YASD. I decided to see what happens if you read a spellbook while hallucinating. What happened? An air elemental appeared next to me and killed me. I didn't even get a turn to act. Whoops

(DL 3, no fire resistance, had a wand of wishing and a magic marker with 70 charges . . .)

Maybe. But, if I'm quick enough, Death beats Fire. (Though it'd be colossal waste to use a charge on a kobold. But it's better than dying in an emergency, I guess.)

Actually, I'd probably use the marker to write Elbereth in a real emergency. Teleport out (with the Ring of Teleportation I have) with my ring or something. Not sure who my quest nemesis is (never done wizard quest), but I think a charge of my wand is reserved for him, unless he has MR.

iirc the wizard quest is pretty easy, once you get there you should be pretty pumped.

That's the thing, though-at that early in the dungeon, it's more of a "one hit, you're dead" thing than anything else.
