That's generally my course of action, but I was being an idiot. I even said in my last post that it's better to survive an encounter than die with a Wand of Death you were saving. I should really take my own advice.
My first ascension was with a wizard. I feel they are the most powerful class in the game, once they get going. But until they get going, they leave an epic trail of wizard bones files.
(FWIW my other ascension was with a Valkyrie, as you're about to try next. I've never managed to do well with any other class, except possibly Barbarians.)
Since my game was on NAO, I'm wondering if someone is going to be elated to stumble across a Minetown bones level with a Wand of Death. I'm just pissed off because there was absolutely zero reason for me to die at that point.
But yeah, as for power... I only had one spell I could cast reliably. (Force Bolt) Every other spell I had at that point was either 99% or 100% failure rate. So I always feel sorta gimped with a Wizard.
Barbarians are the only class I've ever done well with. Even Valkyries (which are supposed to be easier than Barbarians) cause me problems.
