I really thought you couldn't wear helmets for some reason. But, unfortunately, the monk died. I was in Sokoban fighting the treasure zoo, and I ate a mold without paying enough attention and started hallucinating. Apparently I missed something, it paralyzed me, and killed me. I should have just stood on the Elbereth square until the hallucinations stopped.

But I'm starting another Monk up. Not gonna be discouraged after just one death.

No, just body armor and shields-body armor due to -20 to hit, shields because they limit your martial arts skills.

Funny you should mention it. I've just booted nethack up this week after months or years away, and have been having an awesome time.

I currently have a somewhat promising (for me, anyways) ranger going through NAO. This is the first character I've ever gotten up to Level 14, and I got a "oR from Sokobon.

If you're making your own roguelike, maybe you should check it out. It's still in beta but it's pretty playable. Lots of discussion on the forums.

I actually did look into T-Engine after trying (and failing) to do everything from scratch myself. I ended up actually going with libtcod because it seems like T-Engine is all in Lua (a scripting language I don't know.) libtcod supports C and Python, which works a bit better than me.

I'm still working on the most basic stuff right now. (Like implementing Fog of War/Discovery so you can't see everything on the level at all times.) It's going to be a while before I'm ready to do anything aside from core mechanics. But yeah, we can talk about ideas at some point.

I actually don't have a copy of the source handy, not that it's hard to get, of course. But I never even thought about that.

Anyway, the monk has since died, unfortunately. When I died, it reported I was vegetarian so, apparently, I broke vegan at some point and I have no idea when. I thought I was being real careful.

Well, you were still vegetarian, so it wasn't tripe ration. Probably you ate either royal jelly or a manufactured food containing either milk or eggs? Those and puddings are the ones that have tripped me up in the past.

I never came across any royal jelly at all in that game. I know I found a few cream pies but I'm pretty sure I didn't eat those. Hmmm... if I really cared, I could through the ttyrec and figure it out.

I'll have to be more careful in the future, though.
