Barcelona is lovely (Gaudi! Cobblestones!).
However, in case you get tired of city-ness, a good day trip (or longer) from there is Tossa del Mar on the Costa Brava. It's a bit touristy, but there are castle ruins that you can explore (overlooking the beach) and the Mediterranean and the some of the best paella and fish soup to be had anywhere. (And cooler weather.)

Ah, Europe.

I've only been to Italy, but the pace of life is achingly similar. Food, of course, is one of the best reasons to travel out of the U.S.! :)
