I over-tipped for a bad dinner. ( Cutting back. )

I thought a gratuity was included in the bill in Canada.

When I was a hotel maid, tipping was extremely rare and never more than $1/day. But it's a nice thing to do, since they make minimum wage.

Nope, not included in Canada. You have to put it on yourself.

the unwritten standard tip has been moved up to 18%. But I never tip less than 15%. I tip 15% if the service is bad, 18% if it's decent, but if the service is good or really good, I'll tip up to 25%. For one-I've worked as a waitress, and I know that I got a base wage of 2.13 an hour (though in Mn. waitstaff gets true minimum wage, lucky dogs!), so I depended on tips. Also, because as a hairstylist, I still semi-depend on tips, and I have a small belief in karma. :::shrug::: YMMV, of course.

I hold solid at 15%. I think the 18% is wishful thinking on the part of those receiving a tip. As far as I can tell, the standard is still 15%.

I did tip 10% today. The food was good, but the services was the worst! I almost never tip more than 20%. I know wait staff get paid almost nothing, but when the standard is 15%, I don't want people giving me standard service thinking they did something great by rewarding them with a large tip.

Maybe tips as a way of sending a message is passe. I'm guessing if a server gets only 5% or 10%, they think the patron was cheap and ignore that they delivered the wrong entre, forgot part of the mean, or it took four requests for the check before the patron made for the door in order to get attention.
