I didn't get it. They were "impressed" with my "raw intelligence", and my "willingness and ability to jump into areas in which I had little prior exposure" and handled myself "remarkably well", but they "decided to go in a different direction at this time".

No matter how good a candidate you are, sometimes there's someone better. It sucks rocks when you get nosed out like that too.

The other possibility is that someone may have pulled the funding for the position, and so they couldn't hire anyone for reasons beyond their control.

I've come to the realization that this usually reads as "We needed to interview someone external before we could hire our groomed internal candidate."
