I didn't get home til late tonight because I went with Jacki to the Bloomsburg Fair, and I didn't think it would take that long. I felt bad because I was sure that Sebastian was starving from me being gone. I come home and feed him, then notice a small bald spot on his back. Then I see little chunks of fur in the living room. Is this from waiting ( Read more... )

Don't start doubting yourself. You've only had him for a little while. You're both learning about each other, and once you get to the point where you and he come to a mutual understanding, everything will be fine.

My mom has 2 cats and I have been taking care of them for a few weeks and grew up with them. As you stated missing fur could be a result of many things. A lot of times it is because of some kind of worm or flea or something similar. My moms cat had ringworm (its not actually a worm so its not as nasty as it sounds) and it would scratch itself until the hair was gone. I really doubt that it is because of him being hungry. It is probably something very minor and you can usually just put an athlete foot type cream on it to help the skin feel less irratated.

As for feeding the cat. Buy another cat food dish and just put extra dry food out when you are going to be longer. That takes a while to get bad and can sit out for a couple of days if need be. Its only the wet food that gets nasty real quick.

Hey Lynette, I work at a vet. clinic so I thought I'd weigh in on the bald spots thing. Does the skin in that area seem red and/or irritated? Does Sebastian scratch/chew at it excessively? Have you seen him grooming himself in those areas excessively? If the answer to any of those are yes, you could a) monitor and see if it worsens and then phone your vet or b) if it looks really sore and/or is really bothering him, call your vet. anyway. [Have you taken him to a vet. since you got him? If not, they could probably give you some good info on being a new cat care-taker anyway]

Don't stress about being a little late on his feeding. Cats do tend to prefer routines, but this is still new for both of you and there's going to be a period of adjustment. Having a cat in your life isn't very complicated and I'm sure you're doing great as a cat mom!

Good luck! xo

Cats get itchy sometimes... he could have scratched it off. Or his hair got matted... and he scratched it off. Or he was playing with a toy and got rough with it... and it got scratched off. Or he got stressed (because let's face it, cats are slightly nerotic.) and he bit and or scratched it off.

No big deal now. If it continues, or happens in other areas, then worry.

..and by worry I mean, ask a vet. Generally, it's nothing serious.
