What you said about Angel - no way in hell was this your fault. He is who he is. What did he do right before he left Sunnydale? Took a big gulp o' Buffy Blood to save his own ass. Doesn't sound like he's changed much. He uses what he's got to get or do whatever he wants. This just means that he's the same guy we knew. Sure, this is better than the viscious-killer version, but that's still under there somewhere. So no blaming yourself.
