The w-4 needs to be revised to match what is actually filed at the end of the year. i don't know why they haven't done this, but when you elect 2, they withhold the same amount as they would for someone who files married joint or married separate, which gets a higher standard deduction than single. The standard deduction reduces your taxable income. The more your taxable income is reduced, the less income taxes you will owe.

I get all that. My theory is that the Personal Allowance Worksheet on the W-4 is a) busted and should be corrected, and possibly b) a scheme by the IRS to ensure that unmarried workers are always short on federal tax and have to pay at the end of the year. I imagine this is to either partially offset the burden of sending out tons of tax refunds to married couples or to finance Area 51.
