Being frequently disappointed at the inability of our $40 Supermarket Special DVD player to play through the smallest scratches we took advantage of Toshiba's throwing in the towel in the format war and picked up an HD DVD player at apparently substantially less than the cost of the sum of the components. My take on it is that the crux is that HD or Blu-ray is just a premium technology, where VHS or Betamax was a new technology. VHS could do pretty much what beta could do. But the alternative would be... ? Where the alternative to HD is DVD -- you need a nice tv and an eye for detail to see the improvement. So the people who want something better than DVD want the best they can get, a few hundred dollars isn't an issue. Blu-ray is supposed to be technically superior so it makes sense to me that it won.
