The problem about programming is that, while programmatical acts can be as impressive as feats of art or sport, no one will ever see or understand said acts. To whit, when I produce a clever mental pirouette such as this

I think the fact that people do not understand it makes it all the more impressive.
See, I see something like that, and think..."wow, I have no clue what that says, it must be something really intelligent and interesting and this guy must be a genius!" ;-)
And if you mess up, the layman will have no idea and STILL think you are a genius!
Whereas, if a drop a baby on their head, even the most ignorant of people on the subject of childcare will know that something not-quite-right happened.
