I think spirituality doesn't change. And it won't change, unless through evolution. Maybe not even then. The spirituality of a dog howling at the Moon may well be the same as ours. Institutional religion just gets in the way of spirituality. The shamans want to collect a toll on what is our for free. It isn't religion, it's the institutions (and the shamans) which need reforming.

As I read the article, I couldn’t help but consider how religion may be sets of memes, but religio is more of an ever expanding understanding by the individual of oneself and one’s environment. With that said, I interpreted the content of the article of this spiritual outgrowth from the perspective of it following the dynamics of a self-organizing Complex Adaptive System (CAS).

The CAS has five main components, and I interpreted and built upon certain passages from the article as meeting the CAS criteria.

Recognizing Patterns: …fundamental framing enables them to realize patterns of relevance…

Feedback: recursive and self-organizing relevance

Adaptation: …cultivate dynamic integration [between sophia and phronesis] so that sophia was always helping to grow, enhance and develop Sophia (and vice-versa).

Anticipation: Seeing through such [supernatural] illusion provides an opportunity for extraordinary insight, foresight, mindsight for extraordinary rationality and self-transcendence…Cooperation or Competition with the ( ... )

Thanks for the elegant breakdown, comparison and book suggestions. I think I remember reading the Taylor book, or at least an excerpt, but not the Waldrop book. Now I have something to add to my ever-growing must-read list.

It's been over a year, and I'm just seeing this for the first time. Thanks for the link! It fits well with how I feel regarding the rationale behind spiritual experience.
