In my opinion, for what its worth - I have to hold the city of Vancouver hugely and largely responsible for what happened. A hundred recommendations were made after the riots 16 years ago, and seems like the city refused to learn anything from that incident.
What did the city think would happen inviting 100K people to the streets of downtown? Based on previous experience with 50K ppl in 1994 (that was the estimate).
When you allow that many people of a certain demographic, ie young, mostly males, alcohol involved etc.. it does not take a rocket scientist to guess what would happen, in fact guessing is not required - IT HAS HAPPENED PREVIOUSLY. yes the rioters are idiots, but the city is an idiot for granting a venue for this.
It's insane though because they interviewed Gregor Robertson afterward and he kept saying that the city was prepared when in fact, prior to the game he was saying that the city wasn't expecting any violent activities to occur tonight. Ill planning and dumb move on their part. How can you not foresee a riot happening (win or lose) when you put that many people together?
