2 Countries, many highways both big and small, 2 tolls, 1 chaotic detour, 1 nice customs official. It was a long day, deserving of a long post.
The day started off with my hotel room still being occupied. Jimmy and Valentine were over at my room the night before working because I had a better internet connection. I had a suite so it was not a big deal. They were still there working when I woke up at 6:30 in the morning.
So I had pretty much decided that Manhattan was not the place for dogs even though there were a lot there. That morning I was going to take them for a nice walk in Central Park though. It was about 20 blocks away so I got up early to head there.
Well, it turns out on Saturday mornings until 9 AM Central Park is a dog off leash area. So there were lots of dogs there running and playing and Sammy and Neva were able to have some fun for the first time in a few days. There were still a lot of people, so Neva was not completely relaxed, but she had fun running.
The even let dogs swim and run in one of the fountains in the park. Got there and there were all sorts of dogs running and jumping in the fountain, it was really fun to watch. I tried to convince Sammy and Neva to jump up into the fountain, but they did not want anything to do with it.
Back at the Hotel Jimmy and Valentine are still up and working. I packed and relaxed a bit, but finally had to kick them out at around 10:30 because I needed to check out and get going.
Getting out of NYC was fun:
FDR Drive North
Cross Bronx Expressway from Harlem to Bronx
Bronx River Expressway north
Sprain Brook Expressway north
Teconic Expressway more north
NYC is a bit chaotic.
From working in NYC and all the chaos of the past few days I did not really feel up to doing much and I was not sure about going to the Adirondacks anymore. I just wanted to flake out and relax and not be bothered for a few days. If I had a nice place up in the mountains booked where I could do that it would be wonderful, but unfortunately I had planned on going camping/hiking. I have been to the Adirondacks before, and hiking/camping there is fun, but is not really relaxing.
I decided to just go home, but I was going to cut across the Hudson and go through the Catskills again and make in interesting and maybe do a small hike.
Driving through highway 28 in the Catskills is actually quite nice. One of those highways you can really enjoy driving on. Not super fast, but it was fun and some scenic. The best part of the drive was actually north of the park. I stopped a few times and went for some hikes and puddles in streams and rivers.
The best was a place in Delhi NY, SUNY Delhi College Outdoor Education Center and Park. It was a lovely little hiking trail/nature display/historic site just south of Delhi.
It had a labirnyth cut in the crass, lovely trails, stone walls, waterfalls and little wooden bridges. Historic displays of what the area was like when first settled in the late 1700s and what farming was like back then.
Doggies had a wonderful time running and puddling in the river. Neva was jumping and pouncing on mice in the fields. Watching her play and have fun here, with the park surrounded by the Catskills was amazing. It was such a contrast to Central park with the trees surrounded by high rise buildings instead of mountains.
I just smiled. This was so much better.
Central Park was nice, but Neva and I do not belong in Manhattan.
I took a very whacky route north from the Catskills to I-90. I really do hate the interstate and had avoided it all the way down, and so far on the way home, but I wanted to get home.
On the interstate, you have to pay tolls, and you really don't get to see anything, but it was getting late and would be dark soon and I wanted to get home. You can drive amazingly fast on the interstate. Fortunately I did not see any state troopers.
Customs security guard was all confused when I handed him two dog papers. He could not see the black Sammy curled up in the corner sleeping. Finally got home at around midnight.
Sammy and Neva were very happy to be home. Both went bounding up the stairs. Neva was a bit upset when I went back out the car to get stuff and came back down to look out the door and make sure I was not leaving her.
Sammy went and jumped on his favourite spot on the couch and curled up. Neva jumped on her spot on the bed. They both settled down and went right to sleep.
So I am hiding out at home for the next few days and relaxing. The only real difference from normal is that I am actually turning the BlackBerry off *grins*
